Ex-Zim Tennis Player Dies

Former Zimbabwe Davis Cup Tennis player Gwinyai Chingoka has died.

He was 38.

He died on Thursday morning at West End hospital. Chingoka succumbed to the injuries sustained after he was hit by a car last week when he was coming from Harare Sports Club.

Chingoka was introduced to tennis by his late father who was the president of Tennis Zimbabwe as well as the former president of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee Paul Chingoka.

He started playing tennis at a tender age and became one of the best players in the junior rankings.

He was granted a tennis scholarship to study in Texas, United States of America. He studied Economics at Southern Methodist University in Texas from 2001 to 2005.

In 2003 he was named in the Zimbabwe Davis Cup team, he made one appearance as he played one singles and one doubles tie and he lost both.

He also participated in the Dairiboard Zimbabwe Open Championship and he reached the semi-final after he beat Peter Nyamande in the quarter finals.

At the time of his death he was working for Telecel Zimbabwe and he was a part time tennis coach at Harare Sports Club during weekends.
