HARARE — Global food giant Nestlé has injected US$7 million into expanding its Harare cereal manufacturing plant, reinforcing Zimbabwe’s position as a key breakfast supplier for Eastern and Southern Africa.

Expansion Details

The investment includes installing a fourth roller dryer at the facility producing Nestlé’s fortified cereal brand CEREVITA. The upgrade aims to increase output by over 35%, accelerating exports to Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique while meeting growing domestic demand.

Strategic Commitment

Nicole Roos, Nestlé’s Managing Director for East and Southern Africa, linked the move to the company’s “Africa for Africa” strategy:

“This investment proves our strategy in action – sourcing from local farmers, investing in local talent, manufacturing locally, and exporting regionally. Zimbabwe isn’t just a market; it’s a contributor to a resilient, inclusive food system for Africa.”

The plant expansion aligns with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy 1, prioritizing industrialization, jobs, and food security. Nestlé Zimbabwe – operating locally for 60 years – employs 400+ people and supports 350+ suppliers and smallholder farmers.

Government & Regional Impact

Industry Minister N.M. Ndhlovu hailed the project at its launch:

“This signifies Nestlé’s journey of resilience in Zimbabwe. It’s not just infrastructure; it’s a testament to their enduring commitment.”

Khaled Ramadan, Nestlé East Africa MD, emphasized regional benefits:

“CEREVITA is trusted across Southern Africa. This expansion helps meet rising demand while strengthening local economies, sustainable agriculture, and livelihoods.”

The upgrade solidifies Harare’s role as a hub for affordable nutrition, with CEREVITA containing essential vitamins and minerals for vulnerable communities.
