Today, Zimbabwe hosts the prestigious 2025 Regional Annual Sports Awards (RASA) at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC). This marks the first time the nation will host the event since its inception in 2016.

Organized by the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5, this year’s RASA edition aims to motivate, celebrate, and inspire excellence across the region’s sporting landscape.

The awards recognize individuals and organizations that have demonstrated loyalty to the values of sport, rewarded leadership, and acknowledged lasting legacies. What sets RASA apart is its multifaceted approach, celebrating not only athletic achievements but also contributions to arts, culture, and heritage. It is an event where history meets glamour, highlighting the profound impact of sport on society.

In line with the evolving sporting ecosystem, AUSC Region 5 is introducing new award categories this year. These additions aim to honor development coaches, corporate partners, and other behind-the-scenes contributors who play pivotal roles in the success of sports but often go unrecognized.

Out of the 36 nominees, 24 have confirmed their attendance in person, while the remaining will join virtually, ensuring a diverse and inclusive representation. The day’s program commences with a golf day at 6:30 AM at the Zimbabwe Republic Police Golf Club, followed by a community engagement initiative and the Nominees Forum.

The main event kicks off at 4:30 PM with a red carpet reception, the Ten-Year Service Awards, and the primary awards ceremony.

Hosting RASA presents Zimbabwe with an opportunity to showcase its capacity to organize regional events, enhance its international sports profile, and stimulate economic activity across key sectors.

The event aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, emphasizing sport’s role in promoting inclusivity, gender equality, and youth development.

As the nation prepares to welcome dignitaries, athletes, and artists from across the region, the 2025 RASA Awards promise to be a landmark event, celebrating the spirit of unity, perseverance, and excellence that sport brings to communities.

Zimbabwean sprinter Tapiwa Makarawu has been shortlisted for the prestigious Sportsman of the Year award at the RASA (Regional Annual Sports Awards), standing alongside continental giants Letsile Tebogo of Botswana and Akani Simbine of South Africa.

Zimbabwe’s Ellina Mhlanga has been shortlisted for the RASA Sports Journalist of the Year award, proudly representing the nation alongside fellow finalists Cosmas Mulenga of Zambia and Limba Mupetami of Namibia. The nomination highlights Mhlanga’s excellence and dedication in sports journalism, earning her recognition at a prestigious regional level.
