Herdboy Loses US$4,000 in Harare Mushikashika Robbery: “This Was My Boss’s Money!”

Crimes and Courts
HARARE – A 27-year-old Rusape herdboy lost US$4,000 in a brazen robbery after boarding an illegal taxi (mushikashika) in Southley Park, Harare, on Sunday.

Josphate Gadzikwa, from Goto Village under Chief Makoni, was carrying the cash—belonging to his employer, Esther Chaparanga—when he fell victim to the armed robbers.

How the Robbery Unfolded

Gadzikwa had boarded a white Honda Fit mushikashika with four other “passengers,” intending to travel to Harare CBD before proceeding to Rusape. However, the driver allegedly claimed he needed to collect luggage, prompting a detour.

Instead, the vehicle headed towards Masvingo Road, stopping near Skyline tollgate. The driver then reportedly pulled out a knife, demanding Gadzikwa hand over his belongings. The other occupants—now revealed as accomplices—joined in, assaulting him before stealing:

  • US$4,000 cash
  • Samsung phone (Econet line: 0781041714)

The suspects fled towards Masvingo Road, leaving Gadzikwa injured on the roadside.

Police Confirm Investigation

Inspector Chakanza
confirmed the incident, stating:

“Police are investigating a robbery involving a mushikashika in Southley Park. We urge the public to avoid unregistered transport due to such risks.”

Mushikashikas: A Growing Danger

The robbery highlights the dangers of Zimbabwe’s rampant illegal taxi operations, often linked to:

  • Armed robberies
  • Kidnappings
  • Assaults

Despite government efforts to regulate the sector, mushikashikas remain popular due to:
✔ Cheaper fares than formal transport
✔ Limited alternatives in a struggling economy

Public Warning

Authorities advise passengers to:
🚫 Avoid suspicious-looking vehicles
🚫 Never carry large sums of money
🚫 Use registered taxis where possible
