The government of Zimbabwe through the Minister of Information, Communication, Technology, Postal and Courier Services has launched a digital ICT footprint in the country’s second capital Bulawayo.
The Minister, Honourable Dr. Janfan Muswere officially unveiled ICT laboratories at Waterford Primary School and Emakhandeni Primary School as well as Data Centres at Elangeni Training Center and the Bulawayo Backup Data Center at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) at Elangeni, Bulawayo yesterday afternoon.
The launch began at Waterford Primary School with a tour at the newly opened ICT laboratory. Waterford Primary School is a primary and elementary school located in south east outskirts of the city of Bulawayo.
The school received thirty (30) new full kits computer desktops.
Waterford initially had one desktop for 405 pupils. With the new 30 desktops 14 students will now share one desktop. This is an improvement as doing theory for Computer Science was unproductive, though more equipment is still needed.
Emakhandeni Primary School which had a few desktops received an equal number of 30 full desktops to enable learners to partake in ICT practicals.
Emakhandeni Primary school is located in the western suburb of the same name along Lives road.
“The development focuses on primary and secondary schools. This launch of ICT labs is there to capacitate and to train pupils in technology as well as to equip teachers with good digital skills,”said the guest of honor Dr. Muswere.
“The ICT labs at Waterford and Emakhandeni speaks direct to NDS1 (National Development Strategy) more particular Smart Education Pillar.” Said Hon. Musvere.
The tour went from Emakhandeni to RBZ to launch the Bulawayo Backup Data Center.
The commissioning of the RBZ National Data Recovery Site and Elangeni Training Center is to assist in the “public finance management system for good governance and transparent utilasation of financial resources of the government of Zimbabwe.”
“The Data Recovery Site is necessary to secure, storage of all public finance records connecting to Smart Zimbabwe Master Plan.” The Minister explained.
The Smart Zimbabwe Master provides an all-inclusive, focused, and forward-thinking guideline that further identifies how the country can develop, deploy, and manage ICTs across all sectors. To this aim, it provides smart solutions in government, cities, agriculture, education, transportation, health, tourism and mining.
The Bulawayo Backup Data Centre / Data Recovery “is there to replicate all the information that we have at the Harare Data Centre,” said the Minister.
“Our mandate and mission is to ensure that we exploit the full potential of ICTs in order to ensure that by the year 2030, we will have developed an uppermiddle income society which is connected,” Minister Dr. Muswere said.
The agenda is to connect the unconnected from an early age of primary education.
The ICT labs in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary learning institutes is necessary to harness Human Capital Development for a digital economy. These are initiatives prioritised by government to impliment, utilize and establish Smart Zimbabwe Master Plan.
The past few weeks, the Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services Hon. Dr. Muswere has been around the country donating digital appliances.
Before coming to officiate in Bulawayo, the Minister visited two schools in Harare at Epworth.
He officially opened laboratories at Domboramwari High School and Epworth Primary School.
The initiative is set to open more ICT laboratories at other schools across the country.
