Harare – EcoCash, Zimbabwe’s leading fintech platform, has introduced a new international money transfer service, enabling customers to send funds from Zimbabwe to multiple countries across Africa and beyond.
The service, announced in a statement on Wednesday, allows EcoCash users to transfer money to South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ghana, Lesotho, Uganda, China (via Alipay), and other destinations, with more countries expected to be added soon.
A Shift in Digital Remittances
This move marks a significant expansion for EcoCash, transitioning from an inbound remittance platform to a fully functional cross-border payment system.
“The service offers a fast, secure, and affordable way for EcoCash customers to send money abroad for everything—from school fees and medical bills to business payments,” the company said.
Under the new model, users can send money directly to recipients’ bank accounts or mobile wallets. For example, an EcoCash customer in Zimbabwe can now transfer funds directly to a Safaricom M-Pesa wallet in Kenya.
Diaspora and Business Demand
Zimbabwe has one of Africa’s largest diaspora communities, with remittances traditionally flowing into the country. However, the need for outbound transfers has grown, driven by parents paying school fees for children abroad, businesses settling cross-border supplier payments, and individuals covering emergency travel or medical expenses.
“The needs of our customers are evolving, and this new service will address that,” EcoCash stated.
Disrupting Traditional Money Transfers
The launch is set to challenge conventional money transfer operators, which often require physical cash pickups. EcoCash’s digital-first approach eliminates these barriers, offering faster, more convenient, and cost-effective transactions.
The company confirmed that all major South African banks are already integrated into the service, with plans to expand into European and Asian markets soon.
This innovation positions EcoCash as a key player in Africa’s digital remittance landscape, providing seamless cross-border financial solutions for Zimbabweans and beyond.
