A 14-year-old girl tragically lost her life after being struck by lightning while attending a religious gathering at a shrine in Marlborough on Sunday last year.

Angel Pedzisai, a member of the Johanne Masowe yeChishanu faith, was among the worshippers present when the storm hit.

According to Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, the incident occurred during a sudden downpour.

“Police received a sudden death report of a child following a lightning strike in Marlborough,” said Insp Chakanza.

The events leading up to the tragedy began on December 29, 2024, when Angel left home with her two younger sisters, aged 10 and 2, with the intent of attending church.

“At around 10:40 AM, they set out towards the Johane Masowe shrine along Elizabeth Winsor Road,” explained Insp Chakanza.

“However, upon reaching the shrine, it began to rain.”

As the rain intensified, Angel and her sisters decided to return home.

“It was a sudden decision to leave due to the weather,” the inspector noted.

Unfortunately, as they were making their way back, a lightning strike struck Angel.

She was quickly rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The community is mourning the loss of a young life, highlighting the dangers posed by thunderstorms, especially in open areas.

Insp Chakanza urged the public to exercise caution during adverse weather conditions, especially when attending outdoor events.

“This is a tragic reminder of the unpredictable nature of storms,” he said.

“We advise everyone to take precautions and seek shelter during such weather.”
