In a tragic incident in Gokwe, a 34-year-old man was fatally assaulted while attempting to intervene in a dispute between two men fighting over a woman.
Douglas Dube was attacked with a knobkerrie on December 27 last year, as he tried to prevent Descent Gumbi, 22, from assaulting Trust Manyemwe, 21.
The confrontation occurred at the Makwakwa Business Centre, where Gumbi accused Manyemwe of having an affair with his girlfriend.
In a statement, police confirmed the details of the incident, stating,
“Police in are investigating a case of murder in which Douglas Dube died after being hit with a knobkerrie all over the body.”
The police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, added,
“The victim had intervened to stop the suspect, Descent Gumbi, from assaulting Trust Manyemwe. The victim succumbed to the injuries on the way to the hospital on December 28, 2024. The suspect is currently on the run, and we urge anyone with information to report to the nearest police station.”
This incident highlights the dangers faced by those who step in to help during violent confrontations. The community is left mourning the loss of a man who sought to do the right thing.
