Paris, France – Preparations are in full swing outside the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral as it gears up for its much-anticipated reopening later today, Saturday, December 7, 2024.
This momentous occasion follows five years of extensive renovations that were necessitated by a devastating fire in April 2019, which destroyed the Cathedral’s spire and severely damaged its roof.
The fire, which ignited during restoration work, sent shockwaves around the world and prompted a massive outpouring of support for the historic monument. Over €800 million was raised for restoration efforts, showcasing the global significance of Notre Dame as a symbol of French heritage and culture.
“This cathedral is not just a building; it is a testament to our history and resilience,” said Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
“Today, we reclaim a piece of our heart, and we welcome the world to witness its rebirth.”
The inaugural ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7 PM local time (1800 GMT) and promises to be a star-studded event. Notable attendees will include US President-elect Donald Trump, First Lady Jill Biden, and a host of international dignitaries, among them Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“I am honored to be part of this historic moment,” President Biden stated ahead of the event.
“Notre Dame is a symbol of hope and unity, and its reopening is a reminder that we can overcome even the darkest of times.”
As the world watches, the reopening of Notre Dame not only marks a significant milestone in the Cathedral’s restoration but also serves as a beacon of resilience for Paris and beyond.
