The search for Mphoko had been underway since he failed to appear for questioning by authorities in 2019 regarding allegations of criminal abuse of office.
The charges stemmed from Mphoko’s purported intervention in the case of two high ranking Zimbabwe National Road Administration officials who were accused of defrauding the organization of 1.3 million US dollars.
Mphoko’s escape left the country in shook, especially given his high position in the Zimbabwean government.
He had been suspected of supporting Grace Mugabe’s bid for the presidency over that of his former colleague, Emmerson Mnangagwa, the current president of Zimbabwe.
In the aftermath of his disappearance, Mphoko had been declared a fugitive of justice, with the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) officers hunting for him.
