Gift Banda, an aspiring Vice President for the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), was arrested yesterday December 5, 2024, for allegedly forging an Ordinary Level certificate.

This incident occurred as he was preparing to file his nomination papers for the upcoming ZIFA elections, which require candidates to have at least five O-Level passes.

Banda, who is also a former councillor and deputy mayor of Bulawayo, is accused of using a fake certificate that claims he passed the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) tests in 1986 at Mpopoma High School. However, it has been revealed that Zimsec was not established until 1996, and at the time in question, the school only offered Cambridge examinations.

Court documents gleaned by this reporter show that Banda was arrested together with another individual, Anele Zikhali, who allegedly produced the counterfeit certificate.

As of now, Banda is being held at the Western Commonage Police Station while assisting with ongoing investigations.

Police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi indicated that more details regarding the case would be released soon.
