Close Call for Warriors Coach: Michael Nees Nearly Robbed at Rufaro Stadium

Sports Reporter

In a dramatic incident reminiscent of the lyrics from Killer T’s hit song “Masuspect,” Zimbabwe Warriors head coach Michael Nees narrowly escaped a pickpocketing attempt at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday.

The German coach was leaving the venue after witnessing the thrilling Chibuku Super Cup final, where Dynamos Football Club made history by becoming the first team to win the cup two consecutive times, triumphing over Ngezi Platinum in a tense penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.

As Nees approached his car, an unidentified man approached him under the pretense of greeting. The man then attempted to snatch the coach’s phone but failed in his effort. This incident, while minor, has highlighted the ongoing issues of petty crime in the area, particularly in Mbare.

After the story was reported by Soccer24 on X (formerly Twitter), Zimbabweans took to the comments section, sharing a mix of humor, concern, and references to Killer T’s song.

One user, @Saulmakosa, commented, “The coach is new in Zimbabwe and he needs an assistant to show him around. Mbare needs someone who knows the area; there are too many thieves.”

Another user, @baba_asani, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Vapfanha vacho vano bosha masuspects hava basa unosevenza mugavhumende. Vanongorova nechidhuura havatarise kuface sanika mwedzi wapera vasina yerent,” which translates to, “These young guys just con everyone. They don’t care even if you work for the government. They strike indiscriminately.”

User @smellgrey added, “Haa mbare ngaaende ne security,” suggesting that Mbare should be visited with security for safety.

@weston_marimo remarked, “Mbare hatina zera nayo,” indicating that Mbare has a reputation for crime.

Meanwhile, @PreciousMatumbu expressed concern, stating, “Bad news and unwelcome behavior from these thugs.”

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by visitors in certain areas, as Nees continues to adapt to his new role in Zimbabwean football.
