Warriors Head Home With a Win

Zimbabwe senior men’s football team, the ‘Warriors’ finally got it right in their last match of 2021 AFCON after beating Guinea.

The match ended 2-1.

Despite the victory the Warriors remain at the bottom of the group Bvtable with 3 points and are headed home.

Zimbabwe was already out of contention after losing its first two matches to Senegal by a solitary goal and then to Malawi by 2-1.

Senegal tops group B with 5 points from 3 outings followed by Guinea and Malawi with 4 points each.

Mapeza’s wishes were fulfilled, as he wished at least salvage something from the tournament.

In the 26th minute of the game, Warriors skipper Knowledge Musona connecting with a fine header gave Zimbabwe the lead from a cross by Azam FC player Never Tigere.

Two minutes before half time Kuda Mahachi the former Highlanders player scored with a long range shot from outside the box making it 2-0 before the half time whistle.

Guinea then denied Zimbabwe a clean sheet as Naby Keita, the Guinea skipper who plys his trade in Liverpool, England pulled one back with a fantastic shot scoring from outside the box beating the Warriors goalkeeper in the 49th minute.

Mapeza made a few changes in Warriors team during the match, in the 74th minute he introduced highly rated Lyon star Tino Kadewere for Jordan Zemura.

Azam FC ‘savior’ Prince Dube was introduced in the 75th for Admiral Muskwe.

Zimbabwe had last won an AFCON match back in 2006 and for the past three campaigns of the same tournament they did not win any match.

In another group B match played Senegal versus Malawi ended in a 0-0 draw.

This March, 2023 AFCON Qaulifiers begins, there are high hopes from the fans around Zimbabwe, that this victory is a stepping stone for the Warriors for better results.
