Former President of Botswana, Ian Khama, has urged the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to take decisive action against Zimbabwe if it is proven that the country has interfered in the elections of its member states.
Khama’s statement comes amid allegations that Zimbabwe is attempting to support fellow former liberation parties in the region as political dynamics shift across Southern Africa.
Allegations of Election Interference
Zimbabwe is accused of meddling in the electoral processes of SADC member states, which Khama believes undermines democratic integrity. He stated,
“SADC must expel Zimbabwe if found to have interfered with elections in the Region,” emphasizing the need for accountability within the organization.
Upcoming Elections in Namibia
In the context of these allegations, it is noteworthy that Namibia is scheduled to hold elections on November 27, 2024. In a show of solidarity, Zimbabwe’s ruling party,ZANU ZANU PF, has sent a delegation to Namibia to support the ruling party there, SWAPO. This delegation is led by senior officials from ZANU PF, indicating a proactive approach to maintain influence in the region.
This situation highlights the ongoing tensions and the critical role that SADC plays in ensuring fair electoral practices among its member states.
