Zimbabwe has reached a significant milestone in its digital landscape, with the combined penetration rate for mobile phones and internet access exceeding 70%.
This achievement is largely attributed to the successful implementation of various ICT projects through the Universal Services Fund and contributions from private sector players, alongside the introduction of Starlink satellite internet services.
Current Penetration Rates
According to the Ministry of ICT and Courier Services, the current statistics indicate that:
- Internet penetration stands at approximately 73%.
- Mobile penetration has surpassed 90%.
Mrs. Beaullah Chirume, the permanent secretary of the Ministry, expressed excitement about these figures, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring that no region or individual is left behind in the digital transformation.
Government Initiatives and Future Goals
The government has recently licensed Starlink, which is expected to enhance connectivity in geographically challenging areas where traditional infrastructure, such as fiber optics, is difficult to establish.
Dr. Tatenda Mavetera, the Minister of ICT, highlighted the transformative impact of technology across various sectors, including education, e-commerce, agriculture, mining, and health. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering an environment that supports innovation and the use of ICT in all sectors.
The 50th Computer Society of Zimbabwe Annual Summit, held in Victoria Falls, aimed to explore ways to harness the full potential of ICTs, with the goal of propelling Zimbabwe towards becoming an upper-middle-income society by 2030. The National Development Strategy One (NDS1) identifies a digital economy as one of its critical pillars, underscoring the importance of technology in driving economic transformation.
Access to News via WhatsApp
As mobile and internet penetration increases, access to news through platforms like WhatsApp has also surged. This trend reflects a broader shift in how Zimbabweans consume information, with social media and messaging apps becoming vital sources for news and updates.
