Zimbabwe’s Qualification for AFCON

Sports Reporter

Zimbabwe has successfully qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the sixth time after a crucial match against Kenya.

The Warriors secured their spot with a 1-1 draw, thanks to a debut goal from Tawanda Maswanhire in the first half. This goal came after a well-placed pass from Khama Billiat, allowing Maswanhire to score with a low shot inside the box.

Match Highlights

The match took place in Polokwane, South Africa, where Zimbabwe needed only a draw to qualify. However, shortly after halftime, Zimbabwe’s defense faltered when John Takwara mishandled a clearance. Goalkeeper Washington Arubi opted to punch the ball instead of catching it, which allowed Jonah Ayunga of Kenya to capitalize and equalize.

Despite both teams pushing for a winner, Zimbabwe was content to hold on for the draw, which confirmed their qualification. Their final Group J match against Cameroon will now be a formality.

Support from Fans

Even though Zimbabwe plays its international home matches outside the country due to a FIFA ban on its stadiums, they enjoyed strong support at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Thousands of Zimbabweans living in South Africa turned out to cheer for their team, creating a vibrant atmosphere for the match.
