“Stop It!”; HE, Please Tell Them

Political Reporter

The phrase “Stop it!” had become synonymous with former First Lady Grace Mugabe, who famously denounced a proposed law allowing girls as young as 12 to consent to sex and marry.

In light of this, there is a call for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to adopt a similar stance against the contentious ED2030 slogan that has sparked unrest within his party and among the public.

The ruling Zanu PF party recently held a heated Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting where members were explicitly instructed to refrain from chanting the ED2030 slogan. This slogan has ignited discomfort not only among party members but also among the wider voting populace and various stakeholders.

It is time for the President, a self-proclaimed constitutionalist, to assert his authority and discourage his supporters from pushing this divisive agenda.

Despite ascending to power through a military coup in November 2017, Mnangagwa has managed to maintain a commitment to holding elections on schedule. He has publicly declared three times that he plans to step down after his term ends in 2028, promising a restful retirement. Yet, the persistence of those advocating for his extended rule beyond the constitutional limit raises concerns that they are acting out of self-interest rather than a commitment to the nation’s wellbeing.

As Zimbabwe approaches a pivotal moment in its political landscape, with Zanu PF set to select a new leader in 2027 and the nation to elect a new president in 2028, the message should be clear: the party must not impose Mnangagwa’s continued leadership against the will of the people.

Historical power struggles within Zanu PF should not jeopardize Zimbabwe’s future, which cries out for development, growth, and job creation.

The ongoing internal conflict within Zanu PF detracts from addressing pressing issues like economic stability and job creation. Instead of clamoring for power, party members should focus on the needs of the country. It is unrealistic for Zanu PF to amend the Constitution to extend Mnangagwa’s term without overwhelming public support, which is unlikely given the unpopularity of such a move. Two referendums would be required, and the potential for backlash from a weary electorate looms large.

The attempts to keep Mnangagwa in power, despite his expressed desire to step down, echo the past mistakes that led to an extended tenure of Robert Mugabe, who became increasingly disconnected from the needs of his people. Zimbabwe cannot afford to repeat these errors.

It is imperative for Mnangagwa to take decisive action and quell the ED2030 narrative once and for all. He must make it unequivocally clear that the topic is off the table and that the party should respect his commitment to retire.

Mr. President, it is time to channel Grace Mugabe’s fierce declaration:

Stop It!

The future of Zimbabwe depends on clarity, respect for constitutional mandates, and a focus on the pressing needs of the nation rather than the ambitions of a few.
