A Grade 3 learner from Mahindi Primary School tragically lost her life on Monday evening when a grocery store collapsed while she sought shelter from heavy rains in Mberengwa District.

The young girl, who was in her school uniform, was struck by falling rubble and died instantly, as confirmed by Mr. Vafias Hlabati, the Mberengwa District Development Coordinator.

“The girl who was in her school uniform was hit by rubble and died on the spot.” Said Hlabati.

Impact of Heavy Rains

The severe weather conditions have caused significant damage across the district. In addition to the tragic death, 14 other learners were injured at Zvemukonde Secondary School when the roof of a classroom block was blown off.

These students were treated at Zvishavane District Hospital and have since been discharged.

“From the information I got this morning (yesterday) all were treated and discharged,” he said.

Mr. Hlabati reported that the rains have affected 21 schools, two district hospitals, and 54 homesteads, leading to widespread disruption of lessons and examinations. The worst-hit school, Zvemukonde Secondary, experienced severe structural damage, prompting emergency responses from local authorities.

Community Response and Support

The district is currently mobilizing resources to assist affected families, including tents and food supplies, as many villagers have been left homeless. Mr. Hlabati described the situation as a “serious disaster,” noting that Mnene Hospital, the main referral facility in the area, also suffered damage, with its roof blown off in some wards.

Mr Hlabati said Mnene Hospital, had the roof blown off some wards while water tanks that supply the hospital were affected.

“It’s a serious disaster, we also have over 50 homesteads which were damaged and villagers are staying in the open. We are mobilising tents and food for the affected families but we are overwhelmed,” he said.

The Department of Civil Protection has activated its systems to ensure that those in need receive support. They are also coordinating with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to potentially suspend lessons in areas where flooding poses a risk to safety.

Weather Forecast

The Meteorological Services Department has predicted localized downpours across the country, with continued rainfall expected through the week. This weather pattern raises concerns for further incidents and emphasizes the need for community preparedness and response strategies.

Conclusion

The tragic death of the young learner highlights the urgent need for improved infrastructure and safety measures in the face of natural disasters. As the community grapples with the aftermath of the rains, efforts are underway to provide support and ensure the safety of residents and students in Mberengwa District.
