The tragic murder of Inobubele Mhlanga, a 23 year old student from Bulawayo Polytechnic, occurred on November 4, 2024.
She was discovered by a passerby near the TM turnoff bus stop, having sustained serious injuries, including a penetrative wound above her right breast and multiple cuts on her hands.
“The deceased had penetrative wound above the right breast and several cuts on both hands.” Said Insp. Ncube in a statement.
Despite efforts to save her at Mpilo Hospital, she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, police investigations led to the arrest of Thamsanqa Ndebele (26) and Euton Sebatha (36), both residents of Cowdray Park, Bulawayo. Their arrest was confirmed by Bulawayo Provincial Spokesperson, Insp. Abednico Ncube. The investigation began on November 5, when police rounded up known robbery suspects in the area.
A key breakthrough came when Playmore Mpofu (27), another suspect in custody, confessed to participating in robbery activities with Ndebele and Sebatha. His confession implicated Ndebele as the attacker who stole Mhlanga’s handbag, which contained USD$30, and identified Sebatha as the individual who stabbed her.
Insp. Ncube emphasized the importance of community involvement in the investigation, stating that public assistance was crucial in leading to the suspects’ arrests. He urged the community to strengthen neighborhood watch committees to enhance safety and foster unity.
The police have also recovered the flick knife believed to have been used in the murder, which adds to the evidence against the suspects. Insp. Ncube expressed hope that the arrests would bring some closure to Mhlanga’s family and friends, highlighting the tragic loss of an innocent life due to greed among neighbours.
