Many People Across the Country’s Devide Gather to Pay their Last Respects to Phathisa Nyathi, Historian and Author

Renowned author and educator Phathisa Nyathi has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of literary excellence and a profound impact on Zimbabwean society.

Born on July 10, 1951, Nyathi penned over 20 political books focusing on ordinary people’s lives and Zimbabwean politics. He began his career as a Science and Geography teacher at St Columbus’ High School and later became the first headmaster of Nketa High School.

Nyathi’s literary contributions have been widely acclaimed for their thought-provoking portrayal of the human experience, inspiring generations with unique perspectives on Zimbabwe’s history, culture, and social landscape. His writing career spanned over six decades, earning him numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to literature and education.

The City of Bulawayo gathered at the Amphitheater to bid farewell to Nyathi, with notable figures such as Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, Bulawayo Mayor Senator David Coltat, and Deputy Chief Secretary Damasani Bayethe, several Deputy Ministers and Councilors in attendance.

Tributes poured in from across the nation, with Minister Ncube describing Nyathi as

“a giant in Zimbabwean literature whose work will continue to inspire and educate future generations.”

She continued saying,

”It’s so sad that Bulawayo is losing its artistic personnel, just a few weeks ago people were gathered to honor Tshinga Dube at his home, just four days ago it was Sihlangu Dlodlo who was laid to rest and today its Phathisa Nyathi. Njengo Bulawayo silahlekelwe kakhulu”

Nyathi’s commitment to education and mentorship had a lasting impact on his students and colleagues. His son, Butholezwe, remembered him as

“…A spiritual person who encouraged unity and taught people about their own culture.” He continued,

“Ubaba wayengu muntu owayethanda isintu kusekela emncane kungakho yikho wasinika amabizo esiNdebele akhulumayo. Sasebenza sonke kakhulu lobaba sivuselela iAmagugu Cultural Centre yena egxile kakhulu esikweni mina ngigxile ku Science management. Kulesisimo kutshengisa ukuthi usithelo kasiwelanga khatshana lesihlahla.”

Nyathi’s grandson, Londizizwe, cherished his grandfather’s wisdom, kindness, and love, recalling his stories and lessons on perseverance and the importance of family.

Renowned composer, poet and singer, Albert Nyathi was the programes director assisted by Sithandazile Dube.

Permanent Secretary, Bayethe Damasani, reading Phathisa Nyathi’s biography said,

“His writing has inspired generations, offering a unique perspective on the country’s history, culture, and social landscape.”

Bulawayo Mayor Sen. David Coltat contributed saying,

”The late Nyathi was a person who liked unity who encourage unity, taught people their own culture his aim was to remove the white’s brain in black people’s brain”.

Bulawayo’s acclaimed accapella group, Family Voices, wowed the mourners with a song they composed with words extracted from the late author and historian’s works.

Phathisa Nyathi was interred at Lady Stanley Cemetery late yesterday afternoon.
