The Elton Chagumbura Academy is moving in leaps and bounds, in less than a year since its formation, it is already attracting international recognition.
The academy has been invited for a Bangladesh tour most probably the first quarter of this year.
The Cricket Academy was founded by the former Zimbabwe Cricket player Elton Chigumbura.
Six months after retiring from the sport (cricket), Chigumbura set up the Academy to fulfill his desire of developing the sport at the grassroots level.
The academy was set up in the country’s in two largest cities, Harare and Bulawayo.
In the City of Kings the academy is based at Bulawayo Athletics Club (BAC) whereas in Harare it is at Old Hararians.
The 30 day Asia tour is set to expose young talent from the Academy to international cricket.
Part of the mission of the Academy is to promote gender equity as it gives equal opportunities to both female and male players.
It caters for players from 6 years olds to 23 years.
Shane Chigumbura who oversees the operations at Chigumbura academy in Bulawayo briefed the media on their trip to Asia.
“We were invited in Bangladesh for a 30-day training, Bangladesh is the home of spin bowling.”
This is a great opportunity for the youngsters to get some tips from some of the best in the world”
On the other hand Zimbabwe U-19 cricket team is preparing for the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in West Indies.
Young Chevrons are placed in Group C alongside Afghanistan, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea.
The tournament is set to kick-off from January 14th up to the 5th of February 2022.
The Young Chevrons will face the Middle East side Afghanistan on January 16th in their opening group match, four days later they then face Papua New Guinea in their second group stage encounter.
On the 22nd the Young Chevrons will round off their group games clash against Pakistan.
The ICC Under 19 world cup started back in 1988, as the Youth World Cup, it was not staged again until 1998.
Since then, the World Cup has been held as a biennial event, organised by the Internation Cricket Council (ICC).
The first edition of the tournament had only eight participants, but every subsequent edition has included sixteen teams.
India have won the World Cup on a record four occasions, while Australia have won three times, Pakistan twice, and Bangladesh, England, South Africa and the West Indies once each.
Two other teams New Zealand and Sri Lanka have made it to tournament finals.
Bangladesh are the current defending champions.
The Covid-19 Omicron variant has been disturbing the smooth flow of sporting activities world wide, with most affected being the English Premier League matches.
No reports of Covid-19 have been reported yet from Zimbabwe Cricket team. It is hoped that the tournament will proceed without any infections to cricketers.
