On Wednesday evening, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds wreaked havoc in the Midlands Province, leading to significant damage to infrastructure.

This was according to Mr. Charlton Murove, the acting director for Local Government Services who stated that several structures were affected, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Key incidents included:

  • Mnene Mission Hospital in Mberengwa district suffered severe damage to multiple structures, including accommodations for student nurses.
  • A teacher’s house at Nkenyane Primary School in Gweru was destroyed.
  • At Jiri Primary School in Gokwe South, strong winds blew off 26 zinc sheets from one of the classroom blocks. The roof’s age and condition contributed to the damage, with repair costs estimated at US$5,000.

In response to the damage, all learners have been relocated to safer classrooms, and they are being encouraged to remain alert for emergency signals.
