Ishmael Chokurongerwa, the leader of the Johane Masowe eChishanu Gorejena Penyeranyika Sect, has been accused of raping and impregnating three 14-year-old girls who are members of his congregation.
The allegations have surfaced following DNA testing that confirmed he is the father of the children born to these victims.
Court Appearance and Charges
Chokurongerwa appeared in court on October 29, 2024, facing three counts of rape. He has been remanded out of custody until November 21, 2024, by Harare magistrate Mr. Stanford Mambanje. The charges stem from incidents that occurred between February 2023 and March 2024, during which he allegedly exploited his position of authority to engage in sexual relations with the minors without their consent.
Details of the Allegations
- First Count: The first incident reportedly took place between February 2023 and March 12, 2024, resulting in a pregnancy and the birth of a baby girl.
- Second Count: The second victim, also 14 years old, was allegedly assaulted multiple times from 2018 until March 2024, leading to the birth of a baby boy in 2022.
- Third Count: The third victim experienced similar abuse between 2020 and March 2024, resulting in another baby boy.
Investigation and Evidence
The case came to light in March 2024 after police received tips via social media, prompting an investigation. One of the victims was rescued from a safe house established by Chokurongerwa in Mufakose, Harare. Medical examinations confirmed the ages of the victims, and DNA tests established Chokurongerwa as the biological father of the children.
Conclusion
This case highlights serious allegations of abuse of power within a religious context, raising concerns about the protection of minors in such environments. The legal proceedings will continue as the court examines the evidence and testimonies related to these grave accusations.
