After her initial attempt to set the shack on fire failed, the woman allegedly returned later, having consumed alcohol at a tavern, and successfully ignited the shack a second time. The flames quickly spread to nearby structures, resulting in the tragic fatalities.

Community leader Xolelwa Mjekula expressed deep shock over the incident, highlighting the devastating impact of jealousy and violence in relationships. A neighbor, Vuyokazi Kota, reported that the boyfriend was present at the scene, visibly traumatized and suffering from burn injuries.
