The UK government is set to ban disposable vapes starting next year, primarily due to rising concerns about underage usage. This new legislation will require suppliers to clear their stock by June 1, 2025 and it is anticipated that Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will implement similar measures.
Rising Youth Vaping Statistics
Recent statistics reveal a troubling increase in vaping among children. The number of 11 to 15-year-olds using vapes has tripled over the past three years. Health Minister Andrew Gwynne highlighted that 25% of 11 to 15-year-olds reported using a vape last year, with disposable vapes being particularly popular among young users.
Research from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) indicates a 50% rise in children trying vaping within the last year, with experimentation rates among 11 to 17-year-olds increasing from 7.7% in 2022 to 11.6% in 2023.
Environmental Concerns
In addition to health concerns, the government is also addressing the environmental impact of vape waste. Environment Minister Mary Creagh pointed out that single-use vapes contribute to waste and clutter in public spaces. A report by Material Focus noted that over seven million single-use vapes are purchased weekly in the UK, with 73% of users disposing of them improperly.
Broader Strategy Against Smoking
This initiative is part of a larger strategy by Sir Keir Starmer’s government to combat smoking-related issues, which may also include potential outdoor smoking bans in public areas.
