In a shocking turn of events, a police officer was hijacked and robbed after being hired by two men to transport them to Mhondoro. The incident occurred on July 26, 2023, when the officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was approached by Luckmore Tasaruka (26) and Tatenda Saidi (30), both from Domboshava.
Details of the Hijacking
During the journey, the suspects requested the officer to stop the vehicle under the pretense of needing a break. Once the car was stopped, they tied a rope around the officer’s neck, gagged him, and proceeded to rob him of his wallet, which contained US$68, his driver’s license, and national identity card. One of the suspects then took control of the vehicle, driving away with the officer still inside.
The officer was later dumped along the Harare-Bulawayo Road, while his police uniform was left inside the stolen vehicle.
Legal Proceedings
Tasaruka and Saidi have since appeared before Harare magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni, facing charges of robbery. They were denied bail and are scheduled to return to court on October 30.
This incident highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers and raises concerns about safety and security in the community.
