The government has granted a state-assisted funeral for six artisanal miners who tragically lost their lives in a landslide at the Old Homesteak mine dump in Kwekwe.
The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon, and a funeral parade was held on Sunday to honor the deceased.
Victims Identified
The six miners who perished in the incident have been identified as:
- Simon Chauke
- Offias Ncube
- Edward Phiri
- Gasiyani Banda
- Marshall Mpofu
- Ephraim Ncube
Relatives of the victims expressed their gratitude to the government for its support during this difficult time. One relative highlighted the profound loss, stating,
“He was the breadwinner in the family. The loss is just too much to bear. However, I want to thank the government for coming to our rescue.”
Government Response and Safety Concerns
In light of the tragedy, government officials have reiterated the importance of safety in mining operations, particularly for artisanal miners who often work in hazardous conditions. Mr. Charlton Murove, acting director of the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, commended the Central Protection Unit for their swift response, which helped save one life and facilitated the timely retrieval of the bodies.
He urged artisanal miners to prioritize their safety and avoid operating in disused mines, emphasizing that ongoing monitoring by law enforcement agencies is crucial to prevent future accidents.
