In an unprecedented move, a man named Mutapa Bere has publicly proposed love to Miniyothabo Baloyi Chiwenga, the wife of Zimbabwe’s Vice President, General Constantine Guveya Chiwenga.
Mutapa Bere, a well-known social media commentator on Zimbabwean politics, recently took to his TikTok page to discuss a proposed Bill that would allow women to have more than one husband.
According to Bere, this proposal is currently under consideration in the lower house of Parliament and is awaiting approval by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
Bere argued that this bill is intended to promote equality between men and women, as men have traditionally been allowed to practice polygamy.
Mutapa Bere also stated that the Bill included a proposal to do away with the traditional practice of paying lobola (bride price).
Under the proposed law, Bere claimed, if a couple lives together for two weeks, they would be considered legally married and have the right to inherit each other’s property.
The video, which has gone viral on social media, recognises Bere making his unconventional proposal to Colonel Miniyothabo Baloyi Chiwenga, while citing constitutional rights as his legal basis.
He states that he wants to be Chiwenga’s second husband and that the constitution protects his right to do so.
“I am doing a public proposal to Mrs. Baloi Chiwenga. She’s the wife of our Zimbabwean Vice president. So I’m also making my public proposal.
“It is in my constitutional right as well. Mrs Baloi, to those who can see her, wherever you meet her, those who are closer to her, please tell Mrs Chiwenga, the wife of our vice president, that Mutapabere is in love with you.
“I love her, and I love her to marry me and be her second husband. I’m not saying that she must divorce with the vice president, no. But it is within my constitutional right and her constitutional right, we are protected by the law, myself and her and General Chiwenga can do nothing about it, because this is my constitutional right. I love the woman. She is currently married to the vice president of Zimbabwe, General Constantine Chiwenga.
Mutapa Bere went on to say his marriage proposal has nothing to do with disrespecting the elders according to the constitution, stating that he deeply loves her.
“I would like her to marry me and be her second husband. If she loves me back, then please… Please, people, let her know, let her get the video, let her know that Mutapabere is in love with her.
“According to the constitution, she can have two husbands, myself and General Chiwenga. And I’m also protected by the constitution. She is protected by the constitution. And General Chiwenga, since he is also a member of parliament, a member of the cabinet, a parliamentarian, a vice president, a politician, part of the people who have passed the law, must abide to the law and respect the constitution.”
In his public proposal, Mutapa Bere essentially stated that, according to the Constitution of Zimbabwe, it’s no longer disrespectful to pursue a married woman if you love her. He argued that if she agrees, after two weeks you are considered husband and wife, as recognized by the Constitution.
Bere also suggested that his public proposal to the Vice President’s wife sets an example for other men who may want to marry married women under the new law. However, his interpretation of the Constitution has been challenged by many, with some saying he is misrepresenting the provisions of the Marriages Act.
“So, to my other fellow Zimbabweans, it is now in the constitution that it’s not a disrespect when you see a woman that has got a ring, or a woman that is married. If you love her, you don’t need to respect their marriage. No, you don’t need to respect their marriage.
“You need to go and tell her that you love her. If she says yes, move to the house, after two weeks, it will be constitutionally acknowledged that you are now husband and wife, pronounced by the constitution.
“It has to start with the leaders. And I’m starting my journey now. This is my public proposal to Miss Chiwenga.
Bere’s proposal has sparked debate on the legality and appropriateness of polygamy in Zimbabwe, with some stating that the man has a death wish, others applauded him for his bravery in expressing his feelings while others argued that Bere’s interpretation of the law is flawed and others pointing to the constitution’s provisions on the rights of men and women.
Despite his bold move, it remains unclear whether Chiwenga or even Miniyothabo have seen the video or responded to the proposal.
Mutapa Bere’s love proposal to VP Chiwenga’s wife has certainly caused quite a stir on social media.
Several users seemed amused by the idea of men competing for the Vice President’s wife or even proposing to the First Lady of Zimbabwe.
