A tragic incident in Bulawayo has led to a married man, Moses Remayi, being sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing his girlfriend over a missed call from an unknown number.
Remayi’s defence was that his girlfriend’s reaction to the anonymous call had angered him. He claimed that when her phone rang, she said it was her brother, David Dlamini, but refused to answer and threw her phone on the floor. Remayi then dialled the number from his phone, and a man answered, fueling his suspicion of infidelity.
“I was having a conversation with my girlfriend when her phone rang. I asked her who it was, and she claimed it was her brother, David Dlamini. She refused to answer and threw her phone on the floor. I dialled the number using my phone and a man answered. This made me angry, as I suspected she was cheating on me,” Remayi said.
The situation escalated into violence, with Remayi admitting to hitting his girlfriend with a steel chair. However, he claimed he had no intention of killing her.
“We started fighting and the deceased bit my hand and arm. She hit her head on the toilet door and the wall. When we went outside, I hit the deceased with a steel chair. She fell face down and injured her forehead, but I had no intention of killing her,” he said.
Despite Remayi’s claims, witnesses testified that he continued to brutally assault his girlfriend for nearly an hour, using his feet, fists, and an iron bar. The victim was left half-naked and bleeding profusely before being taken to the hospital, where she later died.
Evidence Denhere, a co-tenant, attempted to intervene, knocking on the door and pleading with Remayi to stop. However, he refused, stating that no one could stop him. Denhere then sought help from other neighbours, but unfortunately, it was too late.
The court found Remayi guilty of murder, and Justice Evangelista Kabasa handed down the 18-year sentence. This devastating case highlights the dire consequences of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help when needed.
