Sports Reporter

As of yesterday, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Harare, has declared that anyone vying to run for country’s foot governing body’s the top post will now need to have at least five Ordinary Level (O-Level) passes.

This new requirement could disqualify several hopefuls, including Prophet Walter Magaya, who reportedly tried to influence stakeholders to drop the educational requirement before the meeting.

The move is aimed at ensuring that ZIFA leaders have a basic level of education, according to Rosemary Mugadza, a former Mighty Warriors coach and captain. She emphasized that education is crucial in football leadership, citing her experience as a CAF instructor where academic qualifications were mandatory.

Mugadza even suggested that former footballers should consider night school to get the necessary qualifications.

Potential Candidates Affected:

  • Prophet Walter Magaya: May be disqualified due to the new educational requirement
  • Marshall Gore: Status unknown
  • Ellen Chiwenga: Status unknown
  • Brighton “Panjap” Ushendibaba: Status unknown
  • Richard Mazodze: Status unknown
  • Martin Kweza: Status unknown

The new draft constitution, which includes this education requirement, was voted on ahead of the upcoming elections in January.

Lincoln Mutasa, Chair of the ZIFA Normalization Committee (NC), sees this as a major step towards fulfilling their mandate and preparing for the elective general meeting.

What do you think about this new requirement? Will it lead to better leadership in ZIFA?
