On October 16, a significant theft occurred involving a cash-in-transit van operated by Fawcett Security Company, resulting in the loss of US$20,000.
The incident is currently under investigation by the police.
Details of the Theft
According to police reports, the four security guards on the van violated company protocols by offering a lift to two strangers—a man and a woman—during their route from Beitbridge to Mutare. The passengers were allowed to sit in the cargo section of the vehicle, which also contained a cash box.
The female passenger was dropped off at Rutenga, while the male passenger disembarked at Ngundu. It was at Ngundu that the guards discovered the cash was missing. Following this, they returned to Rutenga to file a police report.
Investigation Status
The police have detained the four guards—Brine Matsena, Benny Nyambi, Confidence Tapiwa Chekero, and Jefitha Chipo Chipfunde—as part of the ongoing investigation. Detectives from the criminal investigations department based in Mwenezi are leading the inquiry into this unusual theft.
