Zimbabwe’s very own Superman, Sirizani Butau, has been released from hospital having been detained after sustaining burns on his arms and legs.
Butau rescued eight people from a horrific accident involving a Beta bus and a fuel tanker that claimed lives on Christmas day in Mutare.
It is said the driver of the bus avoided hitting a drunkard and encroached onto the path of the oncoming fuel tanker resulting in a head on collusion.
It is said Butau, a truck driver, was driving on the Harare-Mutare Highway when he witnessed the accident with all the passengers trapped and the bus and flames has engulfed both vehicles.
The raging fire was threatening dozens of people’s lives.
The Beta Bus was carrying 69 passengers while the Pathera logistics Fuel Tanker had two people. 66 passengers were injured while three died on the spot. The number of the dead was to rise to five.
Butau managed to pull and rescue at least eight people from the wreckage. Butau even tried to rescue the driver of the fuel tanker who is said to have been his close friend.
The President Emmerson Mnangagwa applauded Butau as he said;
“Let me take this opportunity to appreciate Sirizani Butau who saved people from the Mutare accident, as government will honor him for his selfless sacrifice.”
The driver of the Beta bus Philip Chiringo ia said to have disappeared from the scene after the accident.
The TN Bakers gave Mr Sirizani US$1000 for his heroism, and might be offered a spot as a brand ambassador for the company.
Viteqy Medicine lnsurance also donated all the medication for his healing process.
Many fellow Zimbabweans went on to appreciate Butau through sending money into mobile Ecocash account.
When the mobile account reached its cap as per RBZ regulations, Ecocash had to apply to the money regulator to lift this cap and it was granted until March next year. he reached the limit.
It is one in a million people who would risk their lives, with the possibility of endangering themselves or dying, just to save other people, indeed this is true heroic.
Butau suffered 3rd degree burns in the process of rescuing the victims from the inferno.
Burns can cause swelling, blistering, scarring and, in serious cases shock, and even death. They also can lead to infections because they damage the skin’s protective barrier.
Luckily Zimbabwe Super Hero Butau is on the mending path.
