The Nyambi family’s joyous anticipation of celebrating their daughter’s graduation has turned into unbearable grief following the tragic death of Gladmore Nyambi, just one month shy of her milestone.

The 23-year-old Mashava resident was set to graduate from Great Zimbabwe University on November 1 but succumbed to injuries sustained during a dynamite explosion while burning rubbish in her yard.

The incident took place on September 28 at the Mashava King Mine compound, where Nyambi was reportedly burning trash in a sanitary pit.

Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson, confirmed the details of the event, stating,

“I confirm the death of Gladmore Nyambi of Kingmine, who was announced dead on admission at Parirenyatwa Hospital after sustaining burns and deep cuts from an explosion. Police attended the scene and found a one-meter hole which seems to be the point of explosion, and investigations are underway.”

Eyewitness Makaita Chirongoma, a 46-year-old resident of the same section, recounted the moments leading up to the explosion:

“I saw an unusual light while Nyambi was burning the trash, but I couldn’t alert her—it was already too late.”

After the explosion, Nyambi was rushed to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for treatment and was later transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Sources suggest that she may have unknowingly ignited explosives that were present on the property, a concern prevalent in mining areas populated by artisanal miners, commonly known as Makorokoza.

Nyambi was a dedicated student pursuing a degree in Banking and Finance at Great Zimbabwe University, and her untimely death has left her family and friends in profound sorrow. The community is now grappling with the implications of safety in mining environments, particularly regarding the presence of hazardous materials.
