President Emmerson Mnangagwa has launched the Tram-Urban Mass Transportation Research Centre at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), a significant boost to Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 model and National Development Strategy One. This innovative project aims to enhance the country’s mass transportation system.
“I am impressed with what I saw today. It speaks to our vision as a government and what the education 5.0 model can do in finding home-grown solutions to not only the transport situation in the country, but other challenges as well, therefore driving the country forward,” President Mnangagwa said during the commissioning ceremony, held on the sidelines of HIT’s graduation ceremony.
The research centre is a testament to the capabilities of local scientists, engineers, and technicians, who designed, fabricated, and developed all components of the tram. This achievement showcases the rich abilities of graduates from local universities.
Key Objectives:
- Enhance Mass Transportation: Complement Zimbabwe’s mass transportation system.
- Promote Home-Grown Solutions: Foster innovative solutions to national challenges.
- Support Local Talent: Utilize local scientists’, engineers’, and technicians’ expertise.
HIT Vice Chancellor Professor Quinton Kanhukamwe revealed plans to establish a manufacturing plant for the mobile tram and railway system within 12 months, further solidifying the institution’s commitment to driving national development.
This development is a significant step towards achieving Zimbabwe’s national development goals, and we can expect more exciting initiatives from the Harare Institute of Technology in the future.
