A significant scandal has emerged within the Western Cape Police, as twelve officers are now facing serious allegations of extorting money from Chinese-owned shops in Milnerton.
Over the weekend of October 6-7, police arrested these officers, marking a substantial setback for the South African Police Service (SAPS). Initially, seven public order officers, a former officer, and three civilians were apprehended. However, further investigation revealed an additional officer’s involvement, bringing the total to twelve.
The ages of the officers range from 24 to 43.
Colonel André Traut stated,
“These officers, along with a civilian, allegedly took cash from two shops as ‘protection money.’” He added that once the allegations were reported, the Anti-Corruption Unit and Provincial Detectives acted swiftly, arresting the officers while they were on duty. The investigation is ongoing, and Traut noted that “more arrests might follow” as the inquiry continues.
