Innocent Sibonginkosi Ncube
While the rest of the nation was celebrating the birth of Christ, on Christmas day, a Zimbabwe National Army soldier sprayed bullets and killed five innocent civilians.
The accident happened at Wunganai Shopping Centre in Mhondoro Ngezi yesterday afternoon.
Information established by Zim GBC News is that the ZNA Lance Coporal by the name Monga R in the company of another soldier, Dzatutwa from 5 Brigade, arrived at the shopping centre for a beer drink. Monga was armed with an AK47 rifle.
Monga is said to have proposed to a young girl of 15 years.
This did not go well with the father of the girl and other revellers who were gathered at the centre. Monga was somehow shoved into a shop, but he later emerged fleeing.
A crowd pursued him.
Monga then fired two shots into the air before pointing his rifle towards the crowd.
In the ensuing melee he indiscriminately shot at 6 people, four fatally.
Those who died at the scene are Ignitious Kumire 39, Yolanda Mwale 28, Mavhure Mwakiwa 22, and Godknows 31.
Motion Chanaka 30, Jefter Sibanda 25 and John Munyanyi 28 were injured.
The injured were ferried to a nearby clinic but there was no help they could get as there were no facilities for the nature of their injuries. Even when the ambulance was there, the drivers were said to be off duty.
A good samaritan volunteered to drive the injured to Chegutu and was given permission. Unfortunately another civilian who was not named died on the way bring the the number of those who died to five.
A member of the public has condemned the killing of the innocent members of society by soldiers, writing on a WhatsApp debate platform National Dialogue he says,
“On a sad note, a soldier has shot at 6 people in Turf Ward 11 Killing 4 and the other 2 are currently seeking treatment at a local Clinic, We strongly condemn the rogue element in our Military who are blood thirsty and on a killing spree, It’s a sad day in Mhondoro Ngezi Constituency as the poverty stricken citizens are slaughtered like chicken by the Army that is actually supposed to protect the people.”
It has not been established what the armed soldiers were doing at the shopping centre on Christmas day.
