In a shocking incident today, National Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that armed robbers targeted a cash-in-transit van at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo, making off with over US$4 million.

“We are investigating how this robbery took place. It appears there was inside involvement,” Commissioner Nyathi stated.

The robbery occurred around 1500 hours. According to a bank employee,

“The money was being taken to Harare by Safeguard security.”

The employee further explained,

“The robbers took the money from the security guards’ hands outside the bank when they were about to load it into the car.”

An eyewitness provided harrowing details of the event, saying,

“The robbers were six in total and all had massive, dangerous guns. The first robber jumped out of the open Ford Ranger, shouting for everyone to get down and preparing his weapon. Within a split second, the other five jumped out and snatched the trunks from the Safeguard security guards. The guards couldn’t do anything.”

The eyewitness continued,

“The robbers’ car sped straight down 9th Avenue towards Chicken Slice.”

As the investigation unfolds, further details are awaited.
