Zimbabwe’s National Housing and Social Amenities Minister, Zhemu Soda, has sounded the alarm on the deplorable state of government properties, labeling them an “eyesore.”

Speaking at a strategic planning workshop in Mutare, Soda emphasized the urgent need for renovations, citing the dilapidated condition of many buildings, which has led to civil servants shunning these facilities .

“When we talk of repairs and maintenance of government properties, this is actually an eyesore. Most of the government properties that are lying out there are no longer habitable,” Soda stated.

The minister also highlighted the issue of illegal occupation, stressing that prompt action is necessary.

“In most instances, those houses are being occupied illegally… It is crucial that we restore these properties not only for the benefit of our civil servants but also to uphold the dignity of government assets.”

To address this, Soda’s Ministry will collaborate with the Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion ministry to secure funding.

“We will try to justify the cause for the renovations… that we have some properties lying out there, which ordinarily are supposed to be accruing as a non-monetary benefit to our civil servants.”

Key Objectives of the Renovation Initiative:

  • Enhance Working Environment: Improve the working conditions for civil servants
  • Improve Public Service Delivery: Ensure government properties are functional and aesthetically pleasing
  • Uphold Dignity of Government Assets: Restore properties to their original purpose.

This effort is part of a broader government initiative to upgrade infrastructure and public services, boosting economic growth and competitiveness. Stakeholders have expressed support, recognizing the potential benefits for civil servants and the community.

A detailed renovation plan is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks. As the ministry moves forward, Soda has called for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the success of this critical initiative.
