A police officer from Gweru has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of a suspected armed robber.
Mitch Tafirenyika, aged 29, received his sentence from High Court Judge Justice Ngoni Nduna at the Circuit High Court in Gweru last Friday.
According to the State’s case, Tafirenyika was part of a police unit tasked with apprehending two suspected armed robbers, Doubt Munsaka and Tichaona Muzhanduki, at Radway Farm last year. Upon their arrival at the farm, the officers split into groups to surround the farmhouse. Tafirenyika and another officer were armed with rifles during this operation.
The situation escalated when they knocked on the door and identified themselves.
Muzhanduki opened the door, at which point Tafirenyika discharged his firearm multiple times, striking Muzhanduki in the chest and arms. Tragically, Muzhanduki died at the scene as a result of the gunfire. Following the incident, Tafirenyika was arrested for his actions.
