South African Correspondent

Seventeen people were killed in a mass shooting in the remote South African town of Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, with a manhunt underway to find the perpetrators, according to police.

The attack targeted two homesteads on the same street, resulting in the deaths of 15 women and two men. Twelve women and one man were killed at one location, while three women and one man were killed at the second location. An 18th victim remains in critical condition in the hospital.

The police minister, Senzo Mchunu, is expected to visit the area, where officials report the victims were relatives and neighbors gathered for a traditional mourning ceremony. They were preparing for the event, packing goods and presents, including furniture, when the attack occurred on Friday night.

A survivor, Nomnikelo Ndlovu, recounted the terrifying experience: “We heard gunshots and doors that were kicked. We tried to hide, and three people were shot. We are still traumatized.”

Investigation Update

A team of detectives and forensic experts from Pretoria has been deployed to gather evidence and apprehend the perpetrators. However, officials have yet to determine the motive behind the attack or make any arrests.

Regional cabinet member Xolile Nqatha hopes the critically injured man’s recovery will shed more light on the shooting, suggesting the assailants may have been known to the victims.
