A dramatic bus chase unfolded on the Masvingo-Beitbridge road when a Beitbridge-bound Yutong bus initially refused to stop at a police checkpoint. The bus was eventually forced to stop, and a search revealed a staggering 62kg of mbanje hidden in the chassis.
According to Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, Masvingo provincial police spokesperson,
“We arrested the four suspects after a tip-off from members of the public and we will continue to intensify the war against drugs so that we make our society becomes drug free.”
The suspects include bus driver Tonderai Mafo (48), conductor Allen Mberikunashe (25), and passengers Paulina Mudakuvaka (36) and Alice Mutanda (68). Further searches at the Masvingo Central Police Station led to the discovery of additional packets of mbanje in the passengers’ luggage.

The police recovery included six bags containing 28 rolled packets of dagga from the bus chassis and additional rolls from the passengers’ bags. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in Zimbabwe.
