Daisy Mtukudzi, widow of legendary musician Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, has spoken out against online criticism following a dramatic incident at the inaugural Oliver Mtukudzi International Festival of the Arts (OMIFA).
Selmor Mtukudzi, Tuku’s daughter, walked off stage mid-performance, sparking controversy.
“At least the world has witnessed all the drama. I know people will still attack me, but what have I done to deserve this embarrassment?” Daisy said in an interview with The Herald Arts.
Daisy denied responsibility for Selmor’s abrupt exit, stating,
“We did our best to accommodate the entire team, but this drama was beyond my control.” She expressed gratitude to supporters, emphasizing that the festival celebrated Tuku’s legacy.
Virginia Mukwesha, daughter of Mbuya Stella Chiweshe, echoed Daisy’s sentiments, criticizing Selmor’s conduct as “disrespectful” and “unacceptable.” Mukwesha noted that Selmor’s actions overshadowed the event’s purpose: honoring Tuku’s legacy.
Despite the drama, the festival’s closing day featured standout performances by Mokoomba, Aaron Myers, Jay Watta, Tendai Mavengeni, Tamy Moyo, Gemma Griffiths, Bryan K, Hope Masike, and Jah Prayzah.
Jah Prayzah’s vintage performance earned praise from Daisy, who appreciated his loyalty and humility.
“He has been loyal to us over the years and words can’t thank him enough. We are glad that he has come and graced this occasion.”
