Over 1,000 youths have joined the Youth Service program in Zimbabwe , a national initiative that aims to mold young people through service and instill patriotism and unity.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Jenfan Muswere.

The Minister announced that 1,082 youths were recruited for the first intake at Vumba and Dadaya Training Centres after President Mnangagwa relaunched the program at Nhakiwa Vocational Training Centre in May.

“The Youth Service in Zimbabwe Programme was successfully relaunched by His Excellency the President… and 1,082 youths were recruited for the first intake,” Dr. Muswere said.

Previously, graduates of the NYS, derogatorily referred to as ‘Green Bombers’ due to their uniforms’ colour theme, were a feared Zanu-PF militia that underwent training at what used to be called Border Gezi, named after the then militant youth minister, who is now late.

Political observers claim Mnangagwa, who is rumoured to be plotting a third-term campaign bid for the presidency, which is unconstitutional, intends to use the Green Bombers to suppress any dissenting voices.

The program also included a Youth Empowerment Forum, which drew 40,000 attendees and provided socio-economic opportunities for youths in various sectors.

To combat substance abuse, the program conducted national awareness campaigns, reaching an estimated five million youths through media and social media.

Program Developments:

  • Innovation Hub: Construction of an innovation hub at Ruwa Vocational Training Centre is 80% complete, allowing youths to access and develop innovations ¹.
  • Vocational Training Units: Establishment of Production Vocational Training Units is 65% complete, enabling 45 training centers to start production hubs.
  • New Infrastructure: Construction of Sinovo Vocational Training Centre is underway, with plans for the Umguza Dairy Parlour.

The Youth Service program is designed to foster a sense of service, patriotism, and unity among Zimbabwe’s youth. With its various initiatives and developments, the program aims to empower young people and contribute to the country’s growth.
