Government Reigns In Land Barons

The Zimbabwean government has issued a stern warning to land barons and rural community leaders who are involved in the illegal sale of state land.

Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti, Secretary for Presidential Affairs, expressed concern over the rampant corruption happening at district levels, where traditional leaders and officials are making decisions without the knowledge of ministers or secretaries of state.

“We are concerned about the rampant corruption happening at district levels,” Muguti said.

“This is a disconnect that needs to be addressed.”

To address this issue, Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution will now chair provincial economic development, ensuring local authorities’ decisions align with the province’s direction.

Muguti emphasized that stern action will be taken against offenders, regardless of social standing.

“We encourage those who have bought land from land barons in communal areas to vacate themselves,” he said.

“This practice is not only illegal but also harmful to the environment and the communities.”

The government has also directed local authorities to deliver master plans to guide their operations and curb corruption in rural areas. Additionally, Muguti noted that Chinese investors should not be given land by local authorities, and officials involved will be reined in and arrested.

This move aims to protect state land and resources, which are being depleted due to illegal activities. The government’s actions demonstrate its commitment to addressing corruption and ensuring sustainable land management practices.

Central Government has been found wanting on the issue of Landa Barons. How does one forcibly or fraudulently acquire state land, service such a piece of land and sell it to individuals right under the Minister’s nose?

Why does the government or local authority respond by demolition of constructed homes instead of react the moment the land is being services?
