Gokwe – A Chinese national, Cai Yulong, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison by the High Court in Gokwe for murdering a worker at a mine in Zhombe.
Yulong, who runs Stone Steel Blue Mine, shot and killed a worker from the neighboring Black Hand 10 Mine on May 26. The victim and colleagues were constructing a barricade when Yulong opened fire, fatally shooting one worker in the thigh and injuring another in the knee and thigh. He also assaulted a third worker.
“The accused’s actions were unacceptable and warranted the harsh sentence,” said the presiding judge.
In addition to the 30-year sentence for murder, Yulong received a concurrent five-year sentence for attempted murder and a fine for assault.
Meanwhile, in Beitbridge, a 27-year-old woman appeared in court facing charges of unlawful dealing in drugs and contravening the Medicines Control Act. Prosecutors allege she smuggled 103.7 kilograms of dagga worth $10,371 from South Africa, hiding it in blankets packed in sacks.
“We will not tolerate drug trafficking in our country,” said a police spokesperson. “We commend the officers and sniffer dogs for their diligent work in uncovering this illegal activity.”
The woman was remanded in custody until October 1.
