A recent poll conducted by Pulse Ghana on social media platforms revealed a surprising preference among Ghanaian men, with over 5,000 respondents saying they’d rather buy a car for their mothers than their wives.
The reasons cited were heartfelt and thought-provoking:
- “My mother sacrificed everything for me, so I want to reward her,” said one respondent, echoing the sentiment of many who feel a deep sense of gratitude towards their mothers.
- “A wife can leave, but a mother will always be there,” another respondent noted, highlighting the perceived permanence and stability of maternal relationships.
- Fulfilling childhood promises to gift their mothers their first major purchase was also a significant motivator for some.
- Many men viewed their mothers as their “first love,” emphasizing the deep emotional connection and loyalty they feel.
These responses reflect a mix of cultural values, emotional security, and filial duty that prioritize familial relationships over marital ones.
As one respondent succinctly put it, “My mother’s love is unconditional, and I want to show my appreciation in the best way possible.”
