The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has partnered with Midlands State University (MSU) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of Zimbabwe’s telecommunications sector.

This move aims to benchmark the country’s telecoms sector against others worldwide, identifying key factors that attract investment and drive growth.

According to Dr. Gift Machengete, Potraz’s Director-General,

“The objectives were to establish the status of the Zimbabwean telecommunications sector compared with other countries, focusing on factors that can attract investment into the sector and into the country.”

This assessment will also delve into economic, social, and political developments that contribute to country-specific differences, providing valuable recommendations for Zimbabwe’s telecoms sector.

The partnership seeks to understand regulatory efforts made in other countries to attract investment, enhance competition, and implement best practices in Zimbabwe’s sector. By doing so, Potraz and MSU hope to create a more favorable environment for investment and growth in the telecommunications industry.

This initiative is crucial, as investments in telecommunications can have far-reaching benefits for the economy. In fact, research shows that investment in telecommunications benefits all sectors of an economy, particularly in developing countries.

Effective regulatory frameworks and competitive market structures are essential for attracting investment and driving growth in the telecoms sector.

The findings of this assessment will likely provide valuable insights for policymakers, investors, and industry stakeholders, helping to shape the future of Zimbabwe’s telecommunications sector.
