Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Douglas Mwonzora has strongly criticized the ruling Zanu PF party for prioritizing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term extension over addressing the country’s socio-economic challenges.

As the MDC celebrated its 25th anniversary, Mwonzora emphasized that the majority of Zimbabweans are suffering under a corrupt dictatorship that has enriched a few elites while leaving many in poverty.

“Many years later, our people still live under a cruel and corrupt dictatorship… The majority of our people remain consigned to debilitating poverty, misery, and want,” Mwonzora said.

He highlighted the stark reality faced by Zimbabweans, including:

  • Over 500,000 children out of school due to poverty
  • Mass unemployment forcing college graduates into menial jobs
  • Zimbabweans seeking better lives abroad

Mwonzora condemned Zanu PF’s obsession with extending Mnangagwa’s rule, saying,

“While our people are suffering, the ruling party remains obsessed with giving the President and Parliament a third term… looting our national resources and devising methods of stealing future elections.”

Despite internal conflicts and fragmentation, Mwonzora expressed confidence in the MDC’s potential to challenge Zanu PF.

“Of course, the party has gone through great shocks… but it remains standing and true to its values. It has been at the forefront of fighting against delimitation and third-termism,” he said.

Mwonzora reaffirmed the MDC’s commitment to fighting for political, social, and economic reform in Zimbabwe.
