Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa has made it clear that the decision on whether President Emmerson Mnangagwa will remain in power beyond his second and final term in 2028 lies solely with the ruling party’s members, not “outsiders”.
“The President knows what is good about Zimbabwe by adhering to the dictates of the constitution that he will not run for a third term,” Mutsvangwa stated.
“People outside the party should not dictate who will be the next in power because Zanu PF is a constituent which follows the constitution.”
Mutsvangwa emphasized that the decision will be made by Zanu PF members during the party’s Congress next month.
“The question of whether President Mnangagwa will remain in power beyond 2028 will be decided by us, not anyone else,” he said.
This comes amid growing murmurs within the party to keep Mnangagwa at the helm beyond his current term, with some members chanting “2030 vaMnangagwa vanenge vachipo” (Mnangagwa will be there in 2030) at party gatherings.
However, Mutsvangwa’s statement suggests that the party is committed to adhering to the Constitution and respecting the President’s commitment to leaving office when his current term ends.
“The decision on President Mnangagwa’s future rests solely with Zanu PF members,” Mutsvangwa reiterated.
“We will follow the constitution and make our decision next month in Congress.”
