Woman Finds Rat Remains in Loaf of Bread

South African Correspondent

South Africa – Nombulelo Mkumla, a Durban resident, was horrified to discover rat remains in a loaf of Sasko bread she purchased from Spar.

She explained that she was preparing breakfast and wanted to have a toast when she met the disgusting discovery.

“I was preparing toast when I noticed something alarming,” she shared on Facebook.

“I sent a picture to friends, and one identified it as a rat, leading me to suspect contamination during production.”

Mkumla contacted Avonmore Spar, who advised her to reach out to Pioneer Foods, the supplier. However, their response was unsatisfactory, claiming the bread was simply moldy. A Sasko representative later apologized, attributing the issue to baking conditions, which Mkumla found infuriating. “Instead of apologizing, they suggested it was due to baking conditions. This experience has been traumatic and disgusting.”

The post went viral, with over 2,000 shares and numerous comments expressing outrage. Cornel Vermeulen, General Manager of Bakeries at PepsiCo South Africa, confirmed the incident was isolated and emphasized their commitment to quality and food safety. “We conducted a thorough investigation and found no discrepancies in our records. We are disappointed that the consumer had a poor experience and are committed to maintaining the highest standards in our products.”
